- Interesting, I thought Jews bury their dead directly in earth in a talit (prayer-shawl), without tzitzit. I read somewhere that Jews use caskets only for “peace’s sake” in foreign lands, under anti-Jewish foreign rulers, in places where Jewish burring in talits would constitute a scandal. Even in those cases the caskets would be left open in the bottom, to allow direct contact with the earth.
